Food Safety and Quality Solutions

Across the country, food processors are taking a fresh look at their food safety management systems (FSMS) in order to deliver higher quality food products, achieve higher levels of plant efficiency, and comply with increasingly complex regulatory standards and audits. And in West Michigan, they’re turning to MMTC-West help in all three areas.

ISO 22000:2005 for Food Processing Systems

ISO 22000 establishes a global standard for safe food supply chains— from feed producers and farmers, to processors, to retail food outlets and restaurants. The goal is to harmonize the many national and private standards in existence and incorporate the management systems approach of ISO 9001, tailored to food safety management. ISO 2200 incorporates Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles and can be applied to any company in the food chain—from field to store. Benefits include:

  • Provides an internationally accepted quality food chain standard
  • Improves food safety performance by reducing hazards and risks
  • Provides competitive advantage as a “preferred supplier” through ISO 22000 certification>/li>
  • Reduces cost through improved operational control and efficiency and reduced product returns

SQF (Safe Quality Food)

The SQF Program provides independent certification that a supplier's food safety and quality management system complies with international and domestic food safety regulations. This allows suppliers to assure their customers that food has been produced, processed, prepared, and handled according to the highest possible standards, at all levels of the supply chain. SQF is designed as a food safety program, but it also covers product quality, a feature that is unique to this certification program. Benefits include:

  • Reduces the need for inconsistent, costly, and multiple audits
  • Is accepted and endorsed by major U.S. and international retailers
  • Creates greater confidence and trust between buyers and sellers
  • Is an internationally recognized standard endorsed by the Global Food Safety Initiative
  • Provides competitive advantages over non-certified producers and enhanced market access
  • Is manageable to implement, offering three levels of certification

SQF-2000 Quality Systems

Recognized by retailers and food service providers who require HACCP around the world, the SQF Program is designed as a comprehensive food safety system. It is the only certification plan of its kind that offers special recognition for product quality. This two-day course is designed to provide you with detailed knowledge and understanding of SQF and the SQF 2000 Code and prepare you for the role of an SQF Practitioner.

NOTE: it is highly recommended that you complete an accredited HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) training course before enrolling in SQF-2000 training.

Upon course completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understand food safety practices, SQF System principles, activities and terminology
  • Understand how to apply SQF Program principles
  • Understand how to implement a SQF System appropriately to provide safe, quality food
  • Understand how to implement a consistent and effective SQF System

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)

HACCP is a food safety management system that relies on process controls to minimize food-safety risks in the food-processing industry. It provides a structure for assessing risks and putting controls in place to minimize those risks—relying on extensive verification and documentation to ensure that food safety has not been compromised at any step of an operation. Benefits include:

  • Provides a preventative approach to food-packaging safety
  • Helps identify potential process improvements
  • Reduces the need for, and the cost of, end-product testing
  • Complements quality management systems such as ISO 9000, ISO 22000, and SQF
  • Helps maintain compliance to the BRC Global Standard—Food Packaging

Principles of Internal Auditing for Food Processing Systems

This one-day course provides a full description of a comprehensive design for a food processing plant audit
program. It will provide the details of the design and operation of the full audit program for the facility, and
fundamental audit techniques for the auditor. You will leave the course with an understanding of the fundamental principles of internal auditing and their role as the standard experts.

NOTE: It is highly recommended that you complete an accredited HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) training course before enrolling in SQF-2000 training. It is also recommended that you have a basic understanding of GFSI certification/code for auditing.

Upon course completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the differences between audits and inspections
  • Describe the various types of audits
