The company used queries submitted by small business owners as data that contributed to the ranking. Other factors taken into account included annual revenue of new small businesses and profitability percentage.

Grand Rapids placed second in the nation behind Sacramento, Calif. but ranked ahead of cities such as Portland, Ore., Denver, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The city's annual revenue for new small businesses is $293,495 and profitability percentage is 85.2%. Overall, the city was given a final score of 89.
